As a new water treatment process, the biological aerated filter is currently being promoted. According to research and application, there are still many issues that need to be studied in the future:
The characteristics of biofilms and their rapid start-up methods; The interrelationship between biological oxidation function and filtration function; The shedding pattern of biofilm during backwashing process; Further expand the application scope of aerated biofilters and study how they can be combined with other processes in water deep treatment, micro pollution source water treatment, difficult to degrade organic matter treatment, nitrification of low-temperature wastewater, and low-temperature micro pollution water treatment.
The research on the core medium - filter material - in the biological aerated filter will also promote the application scope of this process in China. The BIOSTYR and Biofor processes have strong functions, but there are still problems in their large-scale application in China, such as patent issues. In addition, their investment is relatively large, which also hinders the large-scale application of these two processes in China.
So the research and localization of special filter materials will be the key to the widespread application of aerated biofilters in China.
